“O Lord, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O Lord. You hem me in – behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast…” Psalm 139:1-10
As we are learning a piece of choreography, it takes awhile for it to sink in completely, for the connection between our minds and our bodies to gel, for it to all come together. In order for me to learn a piece of choreography well, I have to focus on it and make time for it. I have to block out distractions or my to-do list and give it time to sink in. And once we have it learned, it flows freely and beautifully, and it becomes so one with our minds and our bodies that we do not have to think about it so much. Our bodies just get it, our muscles have memorized the movement. God is the designer of our minds and our bodies….how they work points to His magnificence. I do funny things until I “get” a piece of choreography in my head. I fall asleep going over it, I wake up still going over it, I go over it at a stop light in my car, and I go over it while dinner is cooking. I cannot seem to put it to rest until it is imprinted on my mind because I cannot wait to be able to dance it from my heart! And isn’t it funny and such a neat gift, how once learned, dancers rarely fully forget a piece…..get them started on remembering a variation from a particular act of a ballet that they did years ago, and all of a sudden, they are marking through the entire variation. It has sunk in, it is stuck in their minds…I love that.
We have so much information and stuff coming at us on a daily basis. Sometimes, I feel like we have so much good information at our fingertips, that it is hard to soak it all in. We also have a lot of negativity coming our way, whether it is the world’s view of what it thinks you should look like, or your own thoughts pressuring you to be perfect or look perfect or to have it all together. Think about all the thoughts and all the information and all the stuff that is vying for your attention today…
Now what if we set it aside for awhile, for a few quiet moments, to soak in the most important information, the most vital words, the most amazing truths? What if we focused on knowing how God feels about us, how He knows us, and how He loves us? What if we meditated on His truth more, so much that we let it gel with our hearts, and therefore affect how we live? What if we think on Him, our Savior, for more of the minutes of our day, and less on the other stuff? How would it change your day, your thinking, and your attitude? What if, like learning that piece of choreography, we put all our attention on one thing – Him, and we worship the One who died for us to save us, and we let this daily dance with Him soften our hearts?
In these verses today, notice all Your Savior is saying to you….He has searched you, He knows you…down to the details of when you sit down and when you get up….He knows what you are thinking…He is familiar with all your ways…He know what you are going to say before you say it….He has His hands on you…keeping you close….there is nowhere you can go to escape His presence….He wants to be with you that much!
Let your thinking on Him, Your pondering over Him, Your learning of His Word, Your writing to Him or taking a walk with Him be your worship to Him….your getting to know Him, and let Him imprint His beautiful love and beautiful grace on your heart, mind, and LIFE.
Prayer: “Lord, let the knowledge of how You feel about me and how You know me so intimately, gel with my heart and my mind so much that it affects the way I live. Thank You that You know me so well, so completely, and so perfectly. Thank You that You love me, You are constant, and You never leave my side.”
