TENDU: “To stretch. A movement in which the working foot brushes from a closed position to an open position, elongating the toes. The toes never leave the ground, but there is no weight on them. Both legs should be straight with tight knees, and strong turnout. (From balletterms.net)….
As I think about that definition of one of the most common ballet movements, tendu, it makes me think of our spiritual lives…
As we go about our work, our day, our lives, we can always have stable grounding, just like the standing leg of a tendu. We can always work and live from that grounded place…Jesus. When we look to Him, our lives go from being closed off, self-focused, to being open to Him and to His love that He wants to put into us and pour out of us. Just like how our toes never leave the ground in a tendu, so can we never loose our footing in life because of our Anchor. Just like there is no weight in the toes in the tendu foot, we don’t have to be pulled down by weights in our own life when Jesus is our grounding weight. We go, we work, we live, and we dance, but just like tendu always has fifth position to go back to, so do we always have an Anchor to go back to. I like to think that Christ causes our souls to elongate…to grow, to deepen, to lengthen, to delight, to be built up in Him. Tendu requires tight knees and strong turnout, as do we need tight hope and strong faith.
Today, keep your hope tightly connected to Him who gives us the best kind of hope for eternity as well as for life. Today, keep your faith strong in the One who offers His love, goodness, and joy to you every single day. Today, stretch your heart out a bit to embrace God more in your life. And today, know that you have a constant Anchor, Christ Himself. 💜
“In Him we live and move and have our being.” Acts 17:28
