What do you do to de-stress? We all experience stress in some way or another, and today, I want to encourage you to note what you need when you feel stressed, and then, to give yourself permission to do the things that help de-stress your heart from busyness, worry, or whatever else is weighing down your heart.
We all need different things to de-stress. Some of us need to be alone, some of us need to be with people, some of us need to rest, some of us need to move! Today, think about the unique ways you de-stress.
For me, some good ways to de-stress are long walks with my puppy, Shaka – coffee cup in hand. It’s time to think, to ponder, to pray, or even to not think. It’s just time to refresh my soul in God’s creation. Another way I de-stress is taking pen to paper. Journaling my thoughts and my stress to God helps unravel my stress. Being in my garden or in the kitchen de-stresses my soul. Give me a sinkful of dishes which represent the little crew of growing boys I feed every day and somehow conquering the dishes gives me a few minutes to de-stress. (I know…that’s a little weird, right? But the soapy bubbles, hot water, cleared-counter…can anyone relate?) Time with my people de-stresses me too. My hubby, my sons, my parents, my grandmother, my siblings, my friends. Nothing like good conversation and company.
Here’s my point today:
Tend your stress. Notice when your heart, thoughts, or body are feeling stress. Notice when you’re feeling overwhelmed, too busy, or too full of lists, emails, or information. Notice when you’re on overload and pull over for a pause.
Stress causes wear and tear on our physical bodies and our hearts, and while we cannot avoid all stress, we can make sure we’re getting enough sleep, good food, rest, sunshine, water, time with God, and time with others that we need. When your stress-o-meter feels like it’s off the charts, notice. And remember, God uses those moments to minister to your heart. He can use His creation to restore your sense of His presence. He can use a walk around the block to whisper His love notes to your heart. He can use the company of a good friend to encourage your soul. He can use the time you draw close to Him to refresh your soul. He can use the things you need to de-stress to minister to your soul.
We’re human. We’re busy gals. We’ve got a lot we’re juggling. Today, remember to be kind to your soul. Notice when stress is weighing you down. Invite the Lord into your stress and let Him bring you back to the calm center of knowing He’s in control of your life. (When I called, you answered me. Psalm 138:3) Let Him tend your stress.

Sarah, my heart can so relate to yours. I am almost 62 years young, a former “ballerina” and I have always loved to do a good sink of dishes! Agree totally that Jesus calls us to de-stress when we notice the call of this world is getting in the way of enjoying His abundant life. Thank you for sharing your life and what He is teaching you with us.

Grateful for your sweet words, Vickie. Thank you for your kindness!
