The 4th of July has become one of my favorite holidays to celebrate. It’s a sweet time to be with my family and to celebrate the freedom that we have in our country. It’s a time to pause and remember the incredible heroes of the present and past who have done everything they can to secure our freedom. It’s a time to feel the deep, down gratitude of living in a country where we can be free.
When I think of the 4th, I think of swimming, my Dad’s red truck parading through the neighborhood parade – my Mom and Granny wearing their star-shaped sunglasses and waving their flags with all the grandkids waving to the crowd, watching fireworks on red, white, and blue patched quilts with my parents, siblings and our tribes of kiddos. Spending time at the lake, sounds of boats and water inviting me to slow my pace a bit. I can almost taste the hotdogs with mustard, relish, and white onions and fruit salad. I think of juicy watermelon and sticky popsicle fingers. I think of hot Texas weather, but not minding a bit because the popsicles, watermelon, iced tea, and swimming keep us cool. I always love the rocking chairs and good company. July 4th reminds me to:
CELEBRATE OUR FREEDOM.
Our country, while imperfect, is beautiful and good.
While sometimes things feel out of control in our country, ultimately, God is in control.
And celebrating our freedom in our country, reminds me to celebrate our freedom in Christ.
Because of Him, we don’t have to live perfectly.
Because of Him, we don’t have to earn our way to heaven.
Because of Him, we don’t have to do life alone.
Because of Him, we are completely free from sin.
Because of Him, we are counted righteous.
Because of Him, we are forever a part of God’s family.
Our freedom in Christ is secure forever.
July 4th reminds me that in general, it is good to celebrate.
So today, celebrate our country, celebrate our faith, celebrate the ones you love, celebrate God, and celebrate life. Celebrate the ways God is working in your heart, your life, and your dreams.
It is good to celebrate!
“They celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness.” Psalm 145:7

Sarah, what beautiful sentiments you have written. Many memories are the same that I have.. We are indeed very lucky to live in America, and even more lucky or grateful to be a Child of God. Just wanted to say thanks for reminding me of these things. I hope you, Brian and the boys had a wonderful Fourth.
