“All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”
Psalm 139:16
Competition is rooted in our nature. It’s rooted in our world. It’s rooted in sports, the arts, everything. Competition gets unhealthy when it grows into comparison.
I remember the first time I felt that little uncomfortable jolt of comparison in my heart. I was 13 years old, and I was dancing the role of Clara in the Nutcracker. My understudy was this tall, frail, beautiful dancer. I was more of a strong, muscular, powerhouse of a dancer. She was like a wisp…and I suddenly felt more like a…thick branch. :)
With ease, the character that played Clara’s uncle in the Nutcracker, wisked my understudy off her feet and onto his shoulder in a seemingly effortless shoulder-sit. Easy peasy. No problem.
When it was my turn…well, it didn’t go so easy-peasy-lemon-squeasy. (This is a phrase I learned from one of my boys. :) )And I automatically assumed it was because of my more muscular stature…and comparison got its way in my heart and planted a little seed of insecurity.
Comparison breeds insecurity. And insecurity robs our hearts of all the joy, splendor, and contentment God designed us to claim.
Do you find yourself comparing? Do you ever feel those similar twinges of insecurity, jealousy, or comparison spring up in your heart? It’s okay. Know, you’re not alone. But friend, please hear me:
YOU ARE SO BEAUTIFUL.
YOU ARE PERFECT THE WAY YOU ARE.
GOD HAS A PLAN FOR YOUR LIFE THAT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND.
GOD WANTS YOU TO BE YOU.
And get this…
When we decided to like who God made us to be,
When we decide we want His plans for our lives,
When we decide that we don’t want to be like anybody else,
When we embrace who God made us to be,
He starts bringing on opportunities, blessings, provisions, and gifts to bless us and guide us in our journey. All He wants is for you to decide today…
I like who I am.
I like the way God made me.
I want to be who God made me to be.
That’s the first step in becoming who God made you to be. You won’t regret this step.
Prayer: “Dear Lord, help me embrace all that You made me to be. Help me catch those comparing thoughts, let them go, and be thankful for the way You made me. Thank You for creating me with such intention and purpose. Give me grace and strength to be me…nobody else. Thank You for the tailor-made plan You have for my life. It makes my heart dance just thinking about how personally You love me.”
